It's All In Your Head

What is so appealing about this picture? For me it is the nonchalant manner of the women; one slouches on the stool whilst the other has her ankle/shoes turned sideways as though to suggest boredom. The folded arms echo this also.

Of course, the man is naked. Somehow this is not such a remarkable or shocking image. In the context of the scene, it seems almost inevitable and to be expected. The man looks to be cleaning and the women are supervising or at the very least monitoring his actions.

There is a mundaneity to this tableau: something deeply ordinary and boring. Even the black hosiery and heels give the impression of normalcy. Man reduced to domestic. A wonderfully simple inversion of the norm and yet lacking any shock factor whatsoever.

I feel that the scene invites the viewer to question just how deeply ingrained our female subservience has become, how degraded and subjagated we are. We accept our roles without rancour and legitimize this state of affairs with pithy excuses and cmindless compliance. This simple photograph shows how easily things could be otherwise.
